Performers come from all parts of Gurez and celebrate with utmost joy and opulence. Displaying a wide array of dance programs, traditional music performances, and colorful robes all around, Gurez festival makes for one of the must-attend festivals of Gurez.

SHINAS: Losing Identity.....Dr Raja Muzaffar BhatRecently I got a chance to visit Gurez valley, the land of Shinas. For many years I had an urge to visit this place, but the same could not materialize due to one reason or another. I am thankful to Janab Mohammad Ramzan Khan, a social activist from Achoora village of Gurez valley who invited me and my friends, Tanveer and Umar, to visit the valley of Shinas recently. Noted environmentalist and senior Indian Forest Service(IFS) officer Mr O P Sharma who is Director Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing J&K Government and his Accounts Officers Akhtar Ali also accompanied us during the trip. Mr Sharma an authority on Forest flora and fauna made us tostop after every two or three kilometers soon after we crossed the Razdan pass . He made us aware about every herb , wild flower and tree we came across on the Bandipora Gurez road. It took us more than 5 hours to reach Dawar the headquarter of Gurez sub division which otherwise is only a 3 hours drive from Bandipora. The 85 kms road from Bandipora to Gurez is quitezigzag and rough. The breathtaking alpine peaks ,dense kail and fir forests , high altitude Birch trees (burza) , and trickling waterfalls hardly makes onefeel he is travelling through such a treacherous road which remains closed for at least 6 months ayear during winters.Construction of Dam in Gurez:After coming down from the Razdan pass, the first village we enter in Gurez valley is Kanzalwan. Soon after passing Kanzalwan we reach Nile village , but due to ongoing construction of a dam for 330 Megawatt Kishen Ganga Hydro Electric project in this area, the village seems to have been bombarded. Kishen Ganga is a Rs 10,000 million dam which is part of a run-of-the-river hydropower scheme that is designed to divert water from the Kishen Ganga River (river Neelum) to a power plant in the Jhelum River basin. The power project will be located in the outskirts of Bandipora town on Bandipora Gurez road. Another village which has been badly affected is Badwan where the dam has been constructed to halt the water, which would be diverted through a 23 kms long tunnel to Bandipora area where the power is to be generated by National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC). The entire population of Badwan has been dislocated.Tears rolled down from my eyes when I saw men and women collecting demolished items from the villages of Badwan , Wanpora , Khopri Hejan etc. Shinas have been living in these villages from ages. They had an emotional attachment to these villages in-spite of the fact that most of them own a house in Bandipora or Srinagar. I am sure majority of dislocated people will now completely migrate from Gurez valley.One could have understood the compulsions of Jammu & Kashmir Government, had the state run J&K Power Development Corporation (JKPDC) been allotted this project, but the previous Government claimed that they had no sufficient equity to take up this project, J&K Government allotted the contract to NHPC. When our Government was not in a position to take up this project, what was the urgency to give the contract to NHPC against few megawatts of power in return? As per my information out of 330 megawatts of power that would be generated in 1st phase from this project, J&K state will get less than 40 megawatts of power from NHPC…..Conclusion:Gurez valley consists of around 10 revenue villages. Out of these ten villages four villages namely Nile, Khopri Hejan , Badwan and Wanporahave been almost completely demolished. These villages will be submerged by next year. The headquarters of Gurez valley ie Dawar can also get affected. Now there will only be 5 to 6 villages left in Gurez valley namely Dawar , Shahpora, Markoot , Achoora and Chorwan. The problem is Gurez valley has very less land availability . Majority of the land is under the control of Army , and it is very difficult for the villagers of Badwan , Nile , Wanpora and Khopri Hejan to get settled.
